The Matinicus 18 design is strongly influenced by traditional North Atlantic small sailing craft as well as by the requirements outlined in Background and Philosophy of what we believe constitutes an ideal boat.
In particular, our Matinicus 18 design has the following three boats to credit for its heritage: 1) John Gardner's "Matinicus" peapod design (after which the Matinicus 18 is named) 2) L. F. Herreshoff's 18' "Carpenter" and 3) Manly Hardy's 18' ocean-going birchbark sailing canoe, on display at the Maine State Museum in Augusta, ME.
