A Sneak Preview

We are fascinated with row/sail skiffs.  Simple.  Versatile.  Fun to use.  They are boats for our times.

Living in Maine, and familiar with our coastal waters and large inland lakes, we know the need for seaworthy craft; boats that can handle adverse conditions when necessary.  We like small craft that can take you home without your heart in your mouth.

Over the past 2 years we have looked hard at our experiences on the water and have built two craft -- Paul Gartside's #147 and L.F. Herreshoff's "Carpenter -- which are differing, yet excellent, representations of the types of boat which inspire us.

With this background, we are now creating our own signature boat.  From this point forward, it will become our stock boat offering. The lines plan is finished, yet open to modifications, and construction of the prototype will begin this summer.  Here, in no particular order, are some of the features we are incorporating:

  • Simple rig; not overcanvassed, no standing rigging. Enjoyably sailed.
  • Camp-cruising capabilities, if desired.
  • Ability to sit upright on its own bottom. Shoal draft (centerboard)
  • Positive floatation for safety.  Easily righted in rare event of capsize.
  • Based in traditional Maine small craft design; seaworthy, stable and good-looking.
  • Light, of composite wood/epoxy/fiberglass construction, using native materials as much as possible.
  • Low maintenance, not "no maintenance."
  • Easily trailered; towable behind a compact car.
  • 18' LOA.
  • Easily rowed when needed.
  • Built-in provision for small outboard motor, if desired; auxiliary not an afterthought.

Care to add to the list?  We would very much enjoy hearing from you about your ideas of an ideal daysailor/camp cruiser.  Please send us email at:  info@labriesmallcraft.com   Thanks!
